Part 5!! Wow, I've never had a part 5 of anything before. hehe. Anyway, I finally found a name for my book, so I'm going to start using that. "Revised Version" really isn't a very good title. So look out for that. (the title is "going under")
I choke on the bagel and start coughing. “Are you okay?” Evan asks, looking scared to death.
“It’s…just a… damn crumb.” I growl. “I’m not… dying.” I flop backwards so I’m lying on my back on his couch, finally able to stop coughing. I look over at Jay, he’s staring at me. I suddenly feel really self-conscious, remembering who I’m talking to.
“Feeling better?” He asks with a smile. I go red. Only I would do something like this.
“It was just a crumb.” I mumble, staring at the floor in shame. I struggle with the overly stuffed pillows on the couch, trying to sit up. Now that I know what to look for, it’s pretty obvious that whoever lives here has some money, or a very big credit card bill at least.
“Okay, Nessie.” He says with a small smile. “Are you tired? I can show you where to sleep if you want.” I frown, is he trying to get rid of me? Does he wish he hadn’t let me stay? Looking at him, I’m not sure that that’s it.
I suddenly remember that it’s somewhere around one in the morning. I don’t know how I forgot. “Yeah, I don’t want to keep you up or anything.”
“Alright. You’re okay with sleeping down here, right? I’ve got some blankets and an extra pillow upstairs that you can use.”
“Thanks for letting me stay here.” I say as he starts to walk upstairs. He turns around to smile at me.
“Anytime, Vanessa.” I jerk back, surprised. No one really calls me Vanessa except for a few teachers at the beginning of the school year and my parents. It’s weird that he knows what my nickname stands for.
A little while after Evan hands me a pile of blankets and walks back upstairs Jude comes back down. “What are you doing here?” He asks rudely, irritated that I haven’t managed to disappear yet. I shrug.
“Evan said I could have the couch. Oh, and thanks for the bagel.” I smile, trying to be nice.
“It was just a bagel.” He growls, like I should know better than to thank him for something so stupid. “How long are you staying for?”
“Um, I hope I can find a place to stay tomorrow.”
“Good, I shouldn’t have to share the damn livingroom.” I look away and start organizing the pillow and blanket mountain. Does he really hate me so much?
After turning out the lights he walks over to his ‘bed’ on the floor, which is thankfully on the other side of the room. I bang my elbow against the table by accident, and I hear Jude sit up in reaction to the noise. “You okay?” He asks, whispering now so he won’t wake anyone up.
“Yeah. I’m fine.” I whisper back, finally getting under the blankets. What does he care if I hurt my elbow or not? He just said he wanted me gone. It's quiet after that, I try not to move around and make a lot of noise for fear of irritating Jude again.
“Hey, Nessie?” Jude asks, his voice loud enough to startle me. A blanket falls off the couch and I lean over to pick it up.
“Yeah?”
“I’m, uh… sorry. About earlier.” He says.
“Oh, no, it’s fine. I’m the one who’s invading your house.”
“I’m not going to try anything, you know? Evan said that you were kind of freaked out by everything.”
“I’m not scared. Don’t worry about it.”
“Okay.” I hear some rustling, which I’m assuming means that Jude is going to bed. It’s not long before I fall asleep too.
