This was one of the most difficult parts to write, since I'm still shaky on their personalities. Read kindly , but tell me if some of it seems inconsistent.
Grace and Jude are in the kitchen. I can hear her shrill voice ordering Jude around, and Jude grumbles in his loud deep voice. “I don’t cook, alright? It’s not like you could do any better.” He complains, right before a plate shatters. Jay grimaces at the noise.
“Is he trying to demolish my house?” Jay says quietly, his breath brushing against my hair. I jump, turning around. I hadn’t realized that he was so close. Jay doesn’t notice, he’s to busy with wrapping up my cut. His black hair is covering most of his face, but I recognize him from my pre-calc class, and my chem. class… and lang. Eesh.
Even though I hadn’t known him personally, I’d seen him enough to recognize him in the halls and stuff. He always sat in the back of every class, he almost never talked, so it really wasn’t my fault that I didn’t know his name.
“I’m sure that Jude’s bagel won’t kill you. You don’t have to worry about eating it.” Jay manages to make me jump again.
“Oh! Um, sorry.” I take a bite of the bagel, which is burnt, but still decent. The cream cheese helps a lot. I look up from the bagel to see Jay smiling. It’s a really tiny smile, but I guess it counts. “What?”
“You apologized for not eating a bagel.” He points out laughing quietly. I shrug; I have not idea why he thinks that’s funny. He’s always been a bit weird though, never talking.
When he moved here, a few years ago, every girl wanted to date him. It was pretty horrible, people followed him around and anyone with eyes could see that he just wanted to be left alone. Once everyone figured out that he didn’t want friends, they stopped trying. Except for Jude, but I don’t have any idea what happened there.
Most people can get away with being quiet and weird, if they have a few friends and have a personality. Jays issue is that he doesn’t seem to have a personality at all. Always polite, always quiet, he was pretty much a shadow or a ghost.
I’ve never been alone with him before, and now I’m in his house. It’s kinda creepy actually, this is the boy who everyone says set fire to his last school. I don’t believe that, but it’s still weird. Now that I’m looking at him, he’s different than I thought. I don’t know what I thought he was like, I didn’t really think about it.
“And now you’re staring at me.” He says quietly, smiling slightly. “Did I do something?” He looks like he actually likes me. I’m staring at him like an idiot and he thinks its funny.
“You think you did something wrong? I’d probably be stumbling around on the street without you.” I remind him. He looks up, surprised, for the first time looking at me right in the eyes. They’re blue.
